Community Health Promotion
People living in central western Washington are some of the least healthy
people living anywhere in the state. We see higher rates of coronary heart
disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes-related illnesses, suicides, unintentional
injuries and motor vehicle accidents. In addition, we have higher rates of teen
pregnancy and reported child abuse and neglect.
The success of programs to improve birth outcomes has shown health care
professionals that collaborative and focused interventions can improve the
health care of a community. With this inspiration, we are joining forces to
tackle these tough health problems and improve our health status. Community
Health Improvement initiatives facilitate collaboration and understanding among
hospitals, private practitioners, public health and other providers to address
local and regional health issues. This regional leadership group defines pilot
projects and takes joint action on health problems common to the region.
Over the next two years we will continue to:
- Coordinate strategic leadership from each of the five counties to work
together on common health problems to maximize impacts and decrease
duplication
- Involve physicians and providers in community health interventions through
their interactions with patients
- Provide continuing medical education credits for practitioners working on
community health issues
